Consider size and raw material consumption.
If we make our Kiddy Trains a lot smaller than a Light Rail car and design
them to only have to carry the weight of two people, they will consume much
less raw materials and their cost will be significantly lower. It is
the same as comparing the costs of a huge $200,000 multi-passenger bus to a
$7,000 small import car that carries 4 people. However, since the Mini
Robot Kiddy Train rides on smooth tracks, it doesn't need: steerable front
wheels; a steering wheel system; or a sophisticated suspension system to
absorb the pounding of the occasional pot hole. If the track is
electrified, the Mini Robot Kiddy train also doesn't need to carry the extra
weight of a power plant; fuel; and a fuel tank. A complicated
mechanical or fluid drive transmission can also be eliminated when an
electric motor is used. Lastly - no internal combustion means no fumes
and pollution from the vehicles.
These small vehicles would be very inexpensive, especially if you set up a
mass production factory and produce 1,000's of them instead of a dozen
total.
